Similar Business Models Website Analysis: FreeFishHeads

Summary of FreeFishHeads

Website: https://www.freefishheads.co.nz/

Thousands of kiwi fishers dump their unwanted fish heads and fish frames – thousands of kiwi’s would love to eat fresh fish heads and frames. So this service is to put the two groups together, reduce waste and conserve fish. It’s simple click on either the “I Have” or “I Want” buttons to receive or donate fish heads. Or to learn more, check out our philosophy page or watch the video above.

FreeFishHeads.co.nz is just one of the initiatives supported by LegaSea to ensure more fish in the water.

How its similar to our business model:

  • provides both 'I have' and 'I want' ---> supply and demand side of the fish heads
  • similar ethos about bringing communities/kiwis together and reducing waste and understanding the issues that affect the environment and/or marine life. While we would be focusing more on land life their business model's focus on environmental impact is similar to what we want to achieve (banning / removing the need and use of 1080 and raising awareness of its affect on the environment)
  • very strong emphasis on philosophy and ethics being a driving force for why they exist

How its different to our business model:

  • less emphasis on poisons etc. and more emphasis on maintaining supply
  • their principles are quite different

What other points does it provide for us to think about:

  • Commercial partners as well as donors and sponsorships
  • Overarching principles - not just 1080 but other poison in the environment used to eradicate 'pests'
  • log-in area for member area of the website

Website Page Details:

  • interactive website especially home page - video of goal on main page and hover over the I have and I want fish head buckets for a directional "Click if you WANT ..." and "Click if you HAVE ..."
  • very clear and simple navigation - not too cluttered
  • very blue
  • log in area to access member area of site

  • include their philosophy and ethos about reducing waste etc
  • 'buyer' can select where they will pick things up from

A bit about LegaSea

Who are we?

LegaSea is the public outreach and fundraising arm of the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council.
LegaSea was established in 2012 to help the public understand the issues affecting our marine fisheries and environment and why we need to restore abundance. LegaSea raises funds to help resource the work the Council undertakes to ensure there are enough fish in the water for future generations.

Our 100% commitment

  • 100% of public donations go towards building more abundant fisheries.
  • All LegaSea’s operating costs are met by commercial partners, sponsors and in-kind private donors.
  • This means we can dedicate all public donations to our core work of advocacy, research and education.
  • These investments fuel our mission: to build abundant fisheries for both current and future generations of Kiwis.

"Stop the Senseless Waste" Create an inshore coastal zone where industrial fishing methods such as trawling, seining and dredging are banned until better selectivity, less benthic damage and reduced wastage can be demonstrated
